DOVER, N.H. -- Richard D. Sedgewick, 88, of Dover, N.H., passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at his home with his wife at his side.
He was born in Janesville, Wis., on June 5, 1924, and was a longtime resident of Dover. Richard went to New Hampton Preparatory School in New Hampton, N.H., and then to the University of New Hampshire where he studied Engineering.
He was an Army Air Force pilot in World War II and served until his discharge in 1948.
On June 8, 1946, he married Claire Cryan, and together they raised four children, Jan, John, Jim and Judy.
Richard was the founder of Airex Corporation, and he maintained a lifelong interest in the business. He was an avid inventor and an early adopter of technology, and an entrepreneur with many patents to his name.
Public service was an important part of his life, and he served for many years on the Dover Housing Authority and Dover City Council.
He enjoyed many hobbies during his long life including aviation, software programming, construction, woodworking, ham radio, antique automobiles, and restoring historic homes on Great Diamond Island in Portland.
He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Claire; four children and their spouses; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Friends and family are welcome to attend a memorial service for Richard on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at Richard's shop which is located at 183 Route 108, Somersworth, N.H. Visiting hours will be from 2:30-3:30 p.m. The service will be held at 3:30 p.m., with a reception immediately following.
