Richard A. Smith, 70
GORHAM -- Richard A. Smith, 70, of Sebago Lake Road, passed away on Feb. 18, 2013, at a Portland Hospital.
He was born on Aug. 27, 1942, the son of the late Loren C. and Pheronia V. (Carter) Smith.
Richard was a graduate of Dover Foxcroft High School, class of 1962. After graduating Richard pursued a career at Dexter Shoes in Dexter where he worked for five years, then went to Sebago Moc Shoe Co. in Westbrook for the next three years. He then went to work for the University of Southern Maine in 1970 where he ran the grounds department, the motorpool, and garage. He retired there in 2004 and started his own small engine repair shop.
Richard married the love of his life, Kathleen A. Chambers in 1968. Richard also loved his dog Molly who would travel everywhere with him in his motor- home where they camped and went to auto races. His special cat Thumpie would wake him up in the early morning for special attention.
Other loves included going with his brother-in-law to ride the back roads of Maine, following auto racing all over the country, from Daytona 500 to Indianapolis 500. He loved the smallest and the largest of tracks. He also raced on his own at Beechridge, Unity, and Exeter racetracks. Richard would frequently go to Tractor shows and pulls. He had a 1952 Farmell Cub tractor which he adored. He would frequently watch pro-boxing, pro-football, and of course Nascar racing. Richard was known as a man who loved to help anyone. If someone's car broke down he would take them home, get them gas, and helped them out in anyway that he could.
Richard was predeceased by his parents; and sister, Roberta A. Smith. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Kathleen A. Smith of Gorham; brothers, Carter and wife Sandra of Dexter, Douglas and wife Jean of Lexington, Ky., a sister, Jacklyn McGinley of Franklin, Ind.; and brothers-in-law, Gary and wife Madeline Chambers of Dexter, and David and wife Sheila Chambers of Dover- Foxcroft.
A special thanks to the McGlinchey family and Melissa and Cas for taking care of the dog and cat, and VNA Hospice services.
Private services will be held at a later date. Arrangements made by Dolby Funeral Chapel. Online condolences may be made to
