Richard A. Lane, 89
PEAKS ISLAND -- Richard A. Lane, 89, of 'Arundel,' 91 New Island Ave., Peaks Island, died on Dec. 4, 2012, at his home.
He was born in Henniker, N.H., on May 3, 1923, the son of George E. Jr. and Clara (Brown) Lane.
Richard graduated from Concord Senior High School class of 1940. He served in the Air Force during
World War II
from 1943 through 1945 in England, France, Belgium and Germany. He was a graduate of the School of Modern Photography in New York City.
Richard worked at Dunlap Photo Service, Concord, N.H.; The Lisbon Co., Lisbon, N.H.; Chichester Lumber Co., Chichester, N.H., and retired from A.W. Hastings & Co., Portland, as a bookkeeper after 22 years. He then became a self-employed contractor, sextant of the Pond Grove Cemetery on Peaks Island, and ran a grocery delivery service. Richard also operated a book and stamp business, dealing mainly in used and antique books.
Mr. Lane was a lover of animals, gardening, books and stamps.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Marie in 1972. He is survived by his sister, Jacqueline G. Lane of Peaks Island.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday followed by a 10 a.m. funeral service at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. Burial will follow in Harmony Grove Cemetery, South Street and Sagamore Avenue, Portsmouth, N.H. Online condolences may be expressed at
