SCARBOROUGH -- Priscilla Winchenbach Edgecomb Nicholson, a resident of Piper Shores in Scarborough for 10 years, died on Jan. 23, 2013, after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Portland on Jan. 20, 1924, to Walter W. and Helen S. Winchenbach. She graduated from South Portland High School in 1941, from Westbrook Junior College in 1943 and University of New Hampshire in 1945. She attained her master's degree in education from the University of Maine. She valued education in all aspects of her life.
She married Perley G. Edgecomb in June 1947 and they resided in Cape Elizabeth with their two children. She started teaching in the public schools in the 1966 as a substitute teacher. She moved into the position of Home Economics teacher for the Middle School. In June 1980, Priscilla retired to spend more time with her family and to pursue her lifelong passion to travel the world.
Throughout her life she was active in both church and community; a member of the People's United Methodist Church since childhood, a member of the Portland College Club, Cape Elizabeth Garden Club, a volunteer at Maine Medical Center and was on the Board of the Cape Elizabeth Home for the Aged. She loved swimming and enjoying the coastal waters of Maine (especially her home in Peabbles Cove), traveling, reading and sewing in all forms. She was an accomplished quilter in her later years.
She was predeceased by her husband of almost 40 years, Perley G. Edgecomb; her second husband, Former State Representative Earl Nicholson; her parents; her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Jane Winchenbach (Florida), her sister-in-law, Phyllis Winchenbach (Freeport) and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leon and Roberta (Edgecomb) Strout (Mexico). Priscilla is survived by her brother, Richard Winchenbach, Freeport; daughters, Deborah and husband John Fleurant, Concord N.H., Patricia and husband Charles Retus, Buxton; and four grandchildren, Lisa Marie Retus, Melissa and husband Josh Jewett, Charles Retus III, and Erin Peabbles Fleurant. She has two great-grandchildren, Reagan Elizabeth and Gage Davies Jewett. She is also survived by her two nieces and their families, several step-children and step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at Hobbs Funeral Home, Cottage Road, South Portland, on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, with visiting hours from 11-12, and a service following at 12 p.m. Burial will follow at Brooklawn Cemetery. Online Condolences may be expressed at www.hobbsfuneralhome.com.
