Phyllis Eudora (Hodsdon) Eaton, 97
SCARBOROUGH - Phyllis Eudora (Hodsdon) Eaton, 97, died peacefully on Sept. 27, 2017, in Scar-borough.
She was born Aug. 30, 1920, in South Portland, the daughter of James Robert Hodsdon and Lona Jean (Gould) Hodsdon.
Phyllis graduated from South Portland High School, was active in Rainbow Girls and later in Eastern Star. She graduated from Gorham State Teachers College in 1942 with a B.S. in elementary education. While there, she met the love of her life, Lyndon Stanley Eaton. They married in 1943 while Lindy was a Navy aviator in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Phyllis returned to Maine when Lindy shipped out, and started her teaching career in pre-school and elementary school in Portland.
When the war ended, the Eatons moved to New Haven, Conn. While Lindy attended Yale School of Architecture, Phyllis was director of the Milford Nursery School and mother to their first son. In 1949, following Lindy's graduation, the family moved to Wilton, Conn., where they remained for 50 years until retirement.
After the birth of their other two children, Phyllis ran a home nursery school; then organized and was director/teacher at the Helen Gander Friends Nursery School in Silvermine, Conn., and then for 27 years was the director of the Wilton (Connecticut) Congregational Day School. She was also a longtime Deaconess of the Wilton Congregational Church and involved in many mission and volunteer efforts through the church.
The Eatons were very interested in international affairs and traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, North and Central America, and to Peru. They hosted an AFS exchange student, Mariel, from Peru in 1968, and a Chinese exchange teacher, Wai Wen, from Beijing in 1993. Phyllis also enjoyed gardening, Scottish country dancing, and family activities.
When Phyllis and Lindy retired, they moved back to their roots in southern Maine to their summer place on Pine Point in Scarborough. In 2001, they were among the first to move into the Piper Shores Retirement Community, where they made numerous friends and enjoyed their remaining days.
Phyllis was predeceased by her beloved husband of 66 years, Lindy; and her parents. She is survived by her brother, James Robert (Sara) Hodsdon, of Casselberry, Fla.; sister-in-law, Phyllis Bailey, of South Portland; son, the Rev. Robert Stanley (Linda) Eaton, of Falmouth; daughter, Lynn P. Parrish, of Burlington, Vt.; son, Gary G. (Heather) Eaton, of Columbus, Ohio; granddaughters, Heather, Kristin, and Brittany; grandsons, Nicholas, Timothy, Winston, Aubrey, Cedric and Niles; and great-grandchildren, Eurzulie, Azaria, and Owen.
The family would especially like to thank the staff at Piper Shores, and particularly the staff of Holbrook Center, for the wonderfully loving and caring attention provided to Phyllis during her time there.
No public services will be held and interment will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the guidance of
