Philip Clifford Sherman Sr., 95
SACO - Philip Clifford Sherman Sr., 95, of Saco, died Thursday morning, May 3, 2018, at his residence. He was born in Portland on Nov. 14, 1922, the son of John Thomas Sherman and Eva Mae (Moore) Sherman.
He grew up in Portland until the age of 19, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, proudly serving in the Seabees during World War II in the South Pacific. Following his discharge from active duty, he returned home, and, on July 4, 1948, he married his sweetheart, Marion Arlena Webster.
Philip began work as an insurance salesman. Then, he changed careers, and began to work for Howes Flooring in Wells, followed by Foyes Carpet and Flooring in Westbrook. In 1962, he started his own company, Sherman and Son Flooring Company, which he ran until his retirement in 1986.
Philip was never one to sit idle. In his retirement, he worked as a carpenter. In addition to building his home in Saco, he also made several beautiful furniture pieces for his family, and also handcrafted a strip kayak. Philip was a member of Saco Lodge #9, A.F. & A.M., for over 50 years.
He was predeceased by a son, Paul Sherman; and his sister, Barbara Sherman.
Philip is survived by his loving wife of almost 70 years, Marion Arlena Sherman, of Saco; two sons, Philip C. Sherman Jr., of Saco, and John Webster Sherman and wife, Katina, of Saco; six grandchildren: Jessica Sherman; Christopher Sherman and wife, Marcia; Stephanie Letourneau and husband, Canaan; Joshua Sherman; Nicholas Sherman; and Chris Sherman; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Mason; and many nieces and nephews.
A Masonic Service, followed by a graveside service with military honors, will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 11 a.m., in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.
Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.
