The Guest Book is expired.
FALMOUTH -- Peggy Bennett Cole, of Falmouth, died on Aug. 29, 2011, at age 86.
A published author, writing was her lifelong passion. She earned fame in the 1950s for her novel, The Varmints, followed by short stories and poetry published in various anthologies as well as Harpers Bazaar, Mademoiselle, New World Writing and Life.
An avid naturalist and active walker, Peggy Bennett retired from Maine to her birthplace in Hendersonville, N.C., nine years ago to enjoy the mild winters. She returned to Maine to be near family during her final illness. She is survived by a grandson and his wife, Gabriel and Laurie Ganberg of Concord, Mass.; two daughters, Cambria Bennett Cole of East Hampton, N.Y., and Jeremy Rossa Cole of Portland; her son-in-law, Eric Martin of Portland; as well as much loved relatives sprinkled around the country: Norma Wilson in California, Sarah Parmarter in New York, Marguerite Metcalf and Cathy Jenkins in Florida.
The family thanks the staff at Falmouth House and Hospice of Southern Maine for providing excellent care.
'In Memory,' please consider a donation to MPBN, Portland Public Library, Nature Conservancy or your nearest homeless shelter, soup kitchen or Animal Refuge League.
