Meredith Ann Jordan, 72
SOUTH PORTLAND - Meredith Ann Jordan passed away peacefully at her home with family by her side on May 13, 2017. She accepted her cancer diagnosis with dignity and throughout her illness benefited from treatments enabling her to enjoy periods of restored health both in Maine and in Venice, Fla. She recently was comforted to be back in her home in South Portland surrounded by her devoted family and cherished friends.
Meredith was born Sept.14, 1944, in Auburn. Following schooling at South Portland High School and Nasson College, she enjoyed her career as a business manager at New England Telephone Company.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dana and Ruth Jordan. She is survived by her sisters, Susan Stella, Judy Blackinton, Deborah Jordan Pearson, brother-in-law Jim Pearson; as well as her niece, Amy Blackinton, nephews Colby and Owen Pearson, Owen's wife, Maud Demazure, and a wide circle of close friends.
For those of you who crossed paths with Meredith, you will remember her genuine generosity and kindness. She was fortunate to retire from New England Telephone Company at age 51 and subsequently filled her days doing kind and thoughtful things for others. She sensitively anticipated others' needs and always provided whatever was needed to ease another's challenges. Those of us who had her in our lives realized the depth of her care and support and knew she always would do anything for us. She was that special person who was constantly there for each of us. We will also remember her quick wit, sense of humor, reliability, organization, sassiness, and deep loyalty to family and friends. Her niece Amy and two nephews, Colby and Owen, were frequent recipients of Meredith's love, devotion, and generosity as well as her uncanny ability to find a bargain on her daily shopping trips. She was the glue in our family, holding fast to family traditions and she transferred that commitment to her relationships with friends who always counted on Meredith to organize get togethers. Meredith collected lifelong friends from grade school, work colleagues, her neighborhood, and her winters in Florida, and held tight to those relationships always. The depth of her caring and kindness made others' lives better and all of you who treasured her friendship know her own life was richer for having you in it.
For all of us, she made sure we stayed connected together and that patterns of the past remained constant with family reunions, birthday celebrations, neighborhood cookouts, Mahjong, cribbage games, and golf. She was the first to offer help to her Florida community and carried over that same spirit in her interactions with her South Portland neighborhood of 31 years.
Meredith recently reflected peacefully about her life, articulating hers was a life well lived with no regrets. She would want her family to thank all of you who have made her life full and her family wants to thank her for the indelible influences she made in our lives. She would want all of us to think of her as we walk Scarborough Beach and Manasota Beach and when an occasion arises to help a friend, think about how you can carry on her legacy by doing that good deed.
We will miss Meredith. We will miss knowing she is in the world, and we will miss knowing she is always there for each of us, our own loyal and constant light. Our lives are richer for having her by our sides and we will hold our memories of Meredith in our hearts forever.
