Matthew Neil Smith, 42
PORTLAND - The Portland community lost a family member Feb. 11, 2017, when Matthew Neil Smith passed away at his home on North Street.
He brought light, laughter and a cutting wit to this world, as well as acceptance of who you are. Matthew was the definition of a true friend.
Matthew was fiercely intelligent. He cared deeply about the arts and had an amazing palate for food and drink. In the summers, you would always find him at Ferry Beach in Scarborough on his days off. In his earlier years, Matthew acted and was excellent in dramatic roles. He could also boogie like no one's business.
People give you a nickname because they love you. It's a sign of affection. Matt had many nicknames: Brandy Alexander, Lee, Murder, Machu Picchu, The Dish, Bastid, Mang, and Macheen.
After his passing, Facebook exploded like a celebrity had passed away, with pictures and statements of his friends' devotion and grief.
Matt leaves behind his mom, Eileen, whom he also called Luscious and Ice; his father, Harry; his sister, Becky, and brother-in-law Bob; his half-sister and brother, Heather and Michael; his nieces and nephews, Ryan, Kyle, Dylan, Ella and William; and his beloved aunts, uncles and cousins who loved him dearly.
Matthew, thanks for the laughter and joy. You will forever live on in our hearts.
A memorial befitting Matthew will be held in Portland. Those who knew him will be notified of the details.
