Mary Louise Hanley, 64

FREDERICK, Md. - Mary Louise Hanley, 64, of Portland, and Frederick, Md., died on Sept. 4, 2017.

She was born Jan. 15, 1953, in Salem, Mass., to Joseph Nelson Hanley and Beatrice Doris Hanley.

Mary Lou was an artist, a poet, philosopher, and political activist. She loved to garden. She was a good and faithful friend to many. Lou was fearless in her ability to create opportunities to pursue life on her own terms and led a life that seemed true and genuine, demanding honesty and integrity from herself and from everyone she encountered. She had a sense of humor and a laugh that made you feel better just by hearing it.

The world has lost a colorful, beautiful, rugged woman, filled with grace. Our dear "Bella" will be missed and leaves an emptiness in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to have known and loved her.

Survivors include her partner Martha Hough of Frederick, Md.; brother Joseph Hanley and wife Susan of Limington; brother Mark Hanley of Parsonsfield; sister Laurie Hanley Raba of Brunswick; and sister Jayne Hanley and husband James McFarlane of Cape Elizabeth. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her brother Patrick and her parents.

A memorial gathering will be held at the Fort Williams pavilion in Cape Elizabeth on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017, from 4 p.m. until sunset.
