PORTLAND -- Mary Ellen Johnson, 67, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 30, 2013. The daughter of Angelo and Jeanette Ferrucci Marcarelli, Mary Ellen was born on March 4, 1946, in New Haven, Conn. She grew up in Hamden, Conn., and graduated from Hamden High School in 1963. Mary Ellen went on to earn degrees from Bates College (1967), where she was Phi Beta Kappa, Brown University (1968) and Southern Connecticut State University (1981).
Raising her family in Enfield, Conn., she was active in the Congregational Church, which was a very important community to Mary Ellen and her family. She worked as a reference librarian for many years at the Windsor, Conn. Public Library.
Following the death of her husband, Malcolm Arthur Johnson (Art) she retired to Portland, bringing to fruition the plans that she and Art had always dreamed about together. A lifelong learner, Mary Ellen got to know the city extremely well by taking frequent walks to the libraries and museums and participating in the OLLI Programs for adult learners. She loved traveling and went on many great journeys via the Road Scholar organization with her sister and brother-in-law. In particular, she embraced her Italian heritage, making several trips to the homeland and learning the language so she could maintain correspondence with relatives there. Mary Ellen was also an avid gardener and continued to cultivate beautiful window boxes at her Portland condo. She was at once kind, generous, strong and lovely. She was a devoted friend to all who knew her, and she will be missed.
Mary Ellen is survived by her sister, Anne Griffith; brother-in-law, Whitney; and her three children, Allison Greco and her husband Mauro, Greg Johnson and his wife Ginger, and Marty Johnson and her husband Patrick Healy. She also leaves behind four grandchildren, Giovanni Greco, Cora and Hadley Johnson, and Arthur Healy; as well as a large and loving extended family.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Mary Ellen's life from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, at the Corinthian Masonic Lodge, 30 Church St., North Haven, Conn. Arrangements are by the Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland.
A few days before her diagnosis, Mary Ellen walked in the Jimmy Fund Marathon Cancer walk,
