SCARBOROUGH -- Mary C. Hathaway, 84, of Holmes Street, Wilton, died peacefully, on Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough surrounded by her family.
She was born in Jay on March 15, 1928, the daughter of Charles and Adelia (Alergrini) Cheli and received her education in local schools.
On Feb. 19, 1949, she married Paul S. Hathaway in Chisholm. He died Feb. 16, 2001.
Mary worked for the Wilton School System, the Wilton Recreation Program and then as a bank teller for many years and very was active in her community, volunteering for the Wilton Area Food Pantry, coaching girls basketball, volunteering at Franklin Memorial Hospital, and working on community blood drives.
She enjoyed her large gardens, was an avid reader, and rarely missed her daily walk around Wilson Lake. Mary loved playing cards, eating out and going to local movies and theatre with her friends.
She volunteered at the Cushing School helping the children to work on their reading skills and donated hundreds of pairs of handmade mittens to the school over the years.
Mary enjoyed spending time with her family and her home was known as being the gathering spot for family and friends for holidays and social gatherings. Mary was an enthusiastic sports fan and loved to watch the Celtics and the Red Sox play. She was most proud of her grandchildren and loved to attend their activities and sporting events.
She is survived by her sons, Steven of Wilton and David of Livermore Falls, daughters, Kathy MacVane and her husband Peter and their children, Kelly and Ian, all of Portland, and Frances Myers and her husband Robert and their children, Meaghan and Andrew, all of Scarborough; a sister, Jean Breton of Jay; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Michael in 1979; and sisters, Theresa Ercolini, Angelina Angiolillo, and Adrienne Bennett.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m., from St. Rose of Lima Church, Jay. The family will receive relatives one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery. A reception will follow the interment at Mary's home on Holmes Street in Wilton. Cremation and memorial services are being cared for and provided by the Wiles Remembrance Center, 136 High St., Wilton. Condolences and memories may be shared on her memorial wall at www.wilesrc.com.
