Mary Ann Sanford, 84
MORRIS, Ill. - Mary Ann Sanford, 84, of Morris, Ill., and a summer resident of Peaks Island, died Nov. 21, 2017, after a long battle with old age.
She was a teacher in Illinois for 30 years, and came to Peaks Island during the summers. When she retired, she began her summer by May 15, and ended it when the water was about to be turned off. One of her rather shady activities was to enlarge the "too-small-to-be-filled" potholes in front of her house, which were subsequently filled by puzzled public works men who had been there just three days before.
She spent more than 60 summers on Peaks Island. Ms. Sanford was a member of and served on the boards of Holy Trinity Episcopal Summer Chapel, the Trefethen-Evergreen Improvement Association, and the Fifth Maine Regiment Museum. During the 1950s and 1960s, she taught swimming, and junior/senior life saving at TEIA under the auspices of the Red Cross. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, she was a member of the Fifth Maine house tour committee.
Her hobbies were reading, traveling, sailing (even in small craft warning winds!), painting, and snoozing in the recliner.
She was predeceased by her parents, William and Lois Sanford; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Jeanne Sanford; and Ella Sanford, the aunt from whom she inherited the cottage.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 8, 2017, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Morris. Per her wishes, cremation will take place and half of her ashes will be buried in the family plot. The other half are to be scattered at her Maine cottage. Arrangements have been entrusted with

301 W. Washington St., Morris, Ill. For further information, visit the website at: www.ucdaviscallahan.com or contact the funeral home at 815-942-0084. Online condolences may be directed to the family by visiting the website.
