Marion Alden (King) Moulton, M.D.
W. NEWFIELD -- Dr. Marion Moulton, of West Newfield, passed away on Nov. 27, 2012, at the Newton Center in Sanford with family at her side.
She was born on June 10, 1914, in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of Allen H. and Edna (Smart) King. She attended schools in Massachusetts and Maine. Marion graduated from Woburn High School at age 16, was accepted into BU College of Liberal Arts majoring in pre-med, planning to be a veterinarian but changed her plans after a friend was bedridden for a year. She passed her exams during her third year of pre-med and was accepted into BU School of Medicine at the age of 19 and was one of eight women in the entire medical school, graduating in 1938. Marion interned at the New England Hospital for Women and Children and joined the medical staff at Smith College. In 1941 she married Arthur Moulton and moved to his home town of West Newfield to begin private practice. Her office was in her home.
During World War II she had office hours in West Newfield and in Sanford as she was asked to cover for some of the doctors who had been called into the service.
Over the next 43 years she served the residents of Newfield and the surrounding towns in Maine as well as in New Hampshire, making house calls as well as traveling to Goodall Hospital. Dr. Moulton filled many medical positions: Maine medical examiner, hospital president and committee member, county medical society president and board member as well as serving on many other boards throughout the years: school physician in three towns and for more than four decades, town health officer. She retired in 1984
