(Tonie) Marie A. Saucier Guay, 69
SACO -- (Tonie) Marie A. Saucier Guay, 69, of Saco, passed away Monday evening on March 4, 2013, at her residence.
She was born in Ashland on Dec. 8, 1943, the daughter of the late Joseph and Bertha (Fournier) Saucier. She was raised in Old Orchard Beach and graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School, class of 1962.
She co-owned and operated Deep Brook Golf Course in Saco with her husband Don. She also did the bookkeeping for her husband when he owned Guays Sunoco. During her high school years she worked for S & B Savings Bank of Old Orchard Beach while she was in high school and during summers in the early 60s. She also worked at the Beach Pharmacy in Old Orchard Beach and Reny Bros. Printers in Saco as their bookkeeper and typesetter in the 70s at which time she met her husband Don and were married in Saco raising their family of seven children.
Her children and grandchildren were a big part of her life whom she loved dearly. Her favorite hobbies and things to do were to go dancing with her husband. She also loved to travel and exercise to maintain her health and dining out with her husband. She loved music and dancing on the Old Orchard Beach Pier in the late 50s.
Tonie was a communicant of St. Margaret's Church of Old Orchard Beach, Good Shepherd Parish.
She was predeceased by her sister, Marge Kerry in 2003. Survivors include her husband Don; her two sons, Edward Pennell and wife Connie, Joe Pennell and wife Missy of Saco, two daughters, Shelly Feagans and husband Ken, and Melissa Guay of Saco; three stepsons, Bill and wife Kathy, David and wife Betty of Kennebunk and Ken Guay of Dayton; her sister, Betty J. Saucier of Ruskin, Fla., and brothers, Al Saucier of Old Orchard Beach and J. Lee Saucier of Biddeford. She is survived by five grandchildren, Patrick, Stephanie, Zoey, Colin and Carter; seven step- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Tonie's symptoms started in 2007, though she wasn't diagnosed with Lou Gehrigs Disease (ALS) until 2009. She fought this disease for six long years, eventually losing the battle at 11 p.m. on March 4, 2013, with her family by her side. She never asked 'why,' just gracefully accepted and moved onto the next chapter of her life with bravery.
Visiting hours will be from 4-7 p.m. on Friday at Cote Funeral Home, 87 James St., Saco. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Margaret's Church in Old Orchard Beach.
