Margaret F. (Peggy) Vreeland, 102
SCARBOROUGH - Margaret F. (Peggy) Vreeland, 102, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2018, at Pipers Shores in Scarborough where she has resided since 2006. Peggy was born in Passaic, N.J. on June 10, 1915, one of four children of the late William G. and Margaret (Moesinger) Fitting.
She received her Bachelor's degree from the New Jersey College for Women at Rutgers University (Douglass College) in 1937. She married Lester A. Vreeland III on August 30, 1940, and raised a family of five children in Pequannock, N.J. She was active in the Girl Scouts, League of Women Voters, and libraries where ever she lived.
Peggy and Lester started camping with family in the early 1960's covering 49 states, most of Canada and much of Mexico. They expanded their travel abroad to Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. They moved to Heath Village in Hackettstown, N.J. when they retired in the 1980's. Several years after Lester's passing Peggy moved to Piper Shores, a retirement community on the coast of Maine, to be close to family.
She was predeceased by her husband Lester; her siblings; and two grandsons. She is survived by five children, Margaret Rauth (Dave) of Pittsburgh, Pa., Penelope Van Duyne of Scarborough, Susan Weinman (Bruce) of Sparta, N.J., Thomas Vreeland (Elise Smith) of Washington, Pa., and Sarah Vreeland (Bruce Clary) of Scarborough; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be planned for later this summer. Arrangements entrusted to
