KENNEBUNKPORT -- Lucy Mehta, 60, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Sept. 19, 2011, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
Born on Jan. 23, 1951, she was the daughter of Samuel and Barbara Spalding. Lucy graduated from Dover-Sherborn Regional High School in Dover, Mass., in 1968, and from the University of Maine in 1972. She received her master's degree in education administration from the University of Southern Maine in 1977.
On Aug. 19, 1972, Lucy married Rohit Mehta and, for the next 39 years, they enjoyed traveling the globe, cooking, watching Red Sox baseball, and spending time with their families.
Lucy was a school administrator and passionate educator for much of her career. She served as an elementary school principal in Gray, Cohoes, N.Y., Burlington, Conn., and Greenwich, Conn. In 1999, however, she and Rohit decided to chart a new life course and moved from Connecticut to the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where she began a new career in personnel management at the Hanalei Bay Resort. While on Kauai, the couple made many life-long friends. They relocated to Maine in 2010.
Lucy will be remembered for her keen eye for interior decorating, her love of entertaining, and her enthusiasm for life. She will also be remembered for her immense courage and grace in the face of a long illness.
She is survived by her husband, Rohit Mehta of Kennebunkport; her parents, Barbara and Sam Spalding of Madbury, N.H.; and her siblings, Philip Spalding and wife Lynn Coffin of Portland, Susan Franks and husband Ed Franks of Columbus, Ohio and their children James and Kate Franks, Benjamin Spalding and wife Stacey Gehringer of Allentown, Pa., and Sarah Spalding and husband Tim Fountain and their children Grayson, Sadie and Sam Fountain of Newburyport, Mass.
