John Tileston Stenberg, 81
BRUNSWICK - John Tileston Stenberg, 81, passed away peace-fully with his family by his side at his home in Brunswick, Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He was known and loved by all who met him for his quintessential qualities of generosity, kindness and honesty.
John was born Aug. 11, 1935, in Boston, Mass., as the only son of John William (b. 1898) and Marion Dane (Griffin) Stenberg, who resided in Dorchester, Mass. At the age of 6, his mother passed away of an illness. His father remarried and John was blessed with a blended family of a brother, Terry, and sister, Susanne. He grew up in Milton, Mass.; graduated from Tufts University with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering; and consulted for such notable companies as Melville Shoes, Lillian Vernon, Gillette, Van Heusen, Shaws and Minolta during his professional consulting career as a facilities engineer.
He was an avid sailor and skier and loved the outdoors, continuing to sail, hike and ski well into his 70s. He learned to sail at summer camp and became active in sailboat racing at the Dorchester Yacht Club in his early teenage years.
John was most proud of his family. He was married to Elizabeth A (Menzies) for 65 years and together they had three children: Kristen E. Rozenberg, Jeffrey A. Stenberg, and James T. Stenberg, who survive them both.
He taught them to ski and sail and imparted upon each of them a curiosity for the world, respect and reverence for nature and his guiding principles of fairness, integrity and respect. All his children continue his legacy of enjoying the water, snow and outdoors.
He dearly enjoyed and valued any opportunity to spend time with his six grandchildren: Kristen Stewart, Kaitlin Stenberg, Erik Stenberg, Joshua Rozenberg, Isaac Rozenberg and Hannah Stenberg. He has one great-grandchild, William Stewart.
John and Elizabeth were longtime residents of both Nashua and Moultonboro, N.H; and later in life moved to Falmouth Maine, and retired in Brunswick.
A celebration of John's life will take place Aug. 13 at The Daniel in Brunswick from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.
