Joan (Ekowicki) Costello, 84
WESTBROOK - Joan (Ekowicki) "Dodie" Costello, 84, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2016, at Avita of Stroudwater, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Joan was born in Portland Oct. 9, 1932, the daughter of the late Peter and Helen (Nalbach) Ekowicki. She graduated from Cathedral High School in the class of 1950 and from Northeast Business School in the class of 1952.
She worked for the New England Telephone Company, retiring as assistant manager in the business office after 32 years of service.
In 1983, Joan married Martin (Bud) Costello; together they moved to Green Valley, Ariz., where they remained until Bud's death, at which time she returned to Maine to be near her family. During their married life, Dodie and Bud traveled extensively to Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, along with three cruises on the Queen Elizabeth II. She was an avid golfer and tennis player; she was a prolific artist, working mainly in oils, ceramics and stained glass.
In her spare time, Joan volunteered at the Maine Medical Center Flower Box for several years. Joan also was a lifelong communicant of the Catholic Church.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, Martin Costello, in 1999; a brother-in-law, Anthony Caprio, in 2006; her father, Peter Ekowicki, in 1955; and mother, Helen Ekowicki, in 2001.
She is survived by a brother, Robert, and his wife Jean Ekowicki, of Gorham; and two sisters, Mary Ekowicki of Portland, and Helena Caprio of Wallingford, Conn. Dodie greatly loved and delighted in her four nieces and nephews: Susan and husband Nicholas DeCarlo of Fairfield, Conn., Michael and wife Terry Caprio of Greer, S.C., Ann Cushing of Gorham, and Peter and wife Connie Ekowicki of North Yarmouth. Dodie also was a great-aunt to 10 great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Avita of Stroudwater, where Dodie was treated with the utmost respect, care, and love by every member of the staff for the past 20 months.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 14, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Anne, 299 Main St., Gorham. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland.
