Gerald Leighton Smith, 72
OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Gerry bet on his last race on June 9, 2017. He was born in Portland, on July 9, 1944, to Donald and Katherine Smith. He grew up in North Yarmouth and was educated there and in SAD #51, where he play-ed several sports and graduated from Greely High School in 1962.
He graduated cum laude from Springfield College in 1966, and later received his master's from University of Southern Maine. He taught physical education at Greely from 1967 until his retirement in 1985.
Gerry always loved the outdoors and hunted and fished with his father and friends from an early age. He also enjoyed skiing with his mother, his brother and sister, and later with his own family. Gerry married Catherine Miller in 1966 and raised two children, Melinda and William, at their Kathy Lane residence in Cumberland where they lived for 35 years.
After leaving teaching, Gerry pursued his real passion, harness racing. He bred, raised and raced standardbreds with his partner Barry Howell, of Nobleboro. Together they owned Trusty Dream, the top Maine Stakes stallion in the mid-to-late 1980s, producing such standout champions as Trusty Blaze, Trusty Star and Jim's Trusty Guy. The Smith family spent many joyous days at the Howell family farm on Damariscotta Lake. Although never becoming an expert, later in life he enjoyed bass fishing with his best friend Florence O'Keefe, along with his father Don, son Billy and grandchildren Travis and Rachel Cutler. Many memorable fishing trips were taken Downeast to stay at Ken and Rick Seeley's camp in Washington County. Gerry spent many enjoyable evenings with his friends at the Vacancy Pub in Saco, developing a great appreciation for karaoke.
Survivors are brother Mark and wife Laura, of Avon; sister Marilyn Glavin, of Palmetto, Fla.; daughter Mindy Cutler, of Hartland; son Billy and wife Martha, of Buxton; former wife Cathy Smith, of Westbrook; best friend Flo O' Keefe, of Old Orchard Beach; grandson Travis and wife Heidi Cutler, of New Gloucester; and granddaughter Rachel Cutler, of Buxton.
Friends are invited to celebrate Gerry's life at an Open House at Toddy Brook Golf Course in North Yarmouth on Sunday, August 6, from 4-7 p.m.
