Gene Fred Stone, 70
SOUTH PORTLAND - Gene Fred Stone, 70, of The Villages, Fla., and South Portland, died at home on Nov. 30, 2017, surrounded by family.
Gene was born on March 26, 1947, in Portland, to George and Carolyn (Babin) Stone. He attended local schools, graduating from South Portland High School in 1965.
Gene served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1968, serving in the Vietnam conflict, where he received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart as a squad leader (Sgt. E-5).
After the Army, Gene attended Husson College and received a degree in accounting. Gene began a career with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 2002.
He spent most of his adult life fighting the effects of Agent Orange, with early onset heart disease leading to a heart transplant in 2007.
Since 2010, Gene and Jo have enjoyed their life in The Villages, playing golf and softball.
Predeceased by his son, Christopher Stone; and his mother, Carolyn Marden; Gene is survived by his wife, Jo Morris, of The Villages, Fla.; daughter, Kimberly Stone, of South Portland; stepdaughter, Lynne Zusi, and her husband Chris; Dr. Kristen Fox and her husband Ben, and three grandchildren, Nolan and Anna Zusi and Jed Fox.
Services will be private, at a later date. Arrangements are under the guidance of
Hobbs Funeral Home,
