Derek Winn
Russell, 20
KODIAK, Alaska -- Derek Winn Russell, 20 years, of Kodiak, Alaska, formerly of Hollis, died Dec. 25, 2012 in Kodiak as a result of a tragic hiking accident.
Derek was born June 22, 1992 in Portland, a son of David and Suzanne (Crump) Russell. He attended the Master's House School at New Life Christian Fellowship in Biddeford, Biddeford High School and graduated from Calvary Chapel Christian Academy in Orrington. After High School, Derek was proud to join the U.S. Coast Guard and was excited to be based in Kodiak, Alaska.
Derek enjoyed the outdoors and liked fishing and hiking. He enjoyed swimming and diving from the cliffs at Indian Cellar at Salmon Falls on the Saco River. He also enjoyed skateboarding, soccer, poetry, and music.
Derek lived by the motto that was inscribed on a plaque given to his father, David from Derek's departed grandmother, Lottie Russell: 'Live your life straight and true, for if written in the skies for the whole world to see - God would be proud and so would I.'
He is survived by his father, David Russell, his mother, Suzanne Russell and her fiance, Bob Haskell; his brother, Josiah Bruns, his sisters, Eliza Hennessey and Mercedes Russell; his grandparents, Patricia Gilley Bolduc and her husband, Paul, Marvin R. Crump, and Gloria Sherman; numerous cousins; and his dear friend, Emma Woodward.
