Betty Scammon Dyer, 96
GORHAM - Betty Scammon Dyer, 96, died Friday, May 11, 2018, in Gorham. She was the daughter of Thelma and Harley Scammon Sr., of Saco. She had lived in Saco and Naples prior to her time at Gorham House. She attended Saco schools and Thornton Academy.
In both Saco and Naples, she was an active community volunteer all her life. Her business career included 24 years at Bridgton Academy, where she was honored as a recipient of the Ray McDonald Distinguished Service Award, and was inducted into the Bridgton Academy Hall of Fame in 2013.
After retiring in 1993, she was an ESL tutor for an Ethiopian family, served as a docent at the Portland Museum of Art, and attended many Senior College classes at USM.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 44 years, Laurence H. Dyer; daughter, Pamela Dyer; and infant daughter, Julia.
She leaves her sisters, Jean Scammon Ilsley, of North Carolina, and Ann Scammon Grant, of Scarborough; brother, Harley Scammon Jr., of Saco; daughters, Gail Dyer of Gardiner, and Susan Dyer Cole (Bruce) of North Bridgton; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
