Barbara Akeley
Seaman, 90
PORTLAND -- Barbara Akeley Seaman passed away on Aug. 10, 2013, at the age of 90.
She was born on April 3, 1923, in Presque Isle, the daughter of George and Beulah Akeley. In 1945 she married Kenneth Wylie Seaman to whom she was married for 27 years.
Barbara graduated from the University of Maine - Orono and taught high school English for one year on the island of Islesboro. She then stayed home to raise her four children. Later in life, she went to work for the English Department at Northwestern University in 1973.
Upon retirement, she returned to her beloved state of Maine, settling in the Portland area. She lived a very joyful, exciting and independent life taking great pleasure in traveling, reading, hiking, and theatre.
Barbara is survived by her four children, Mary Love of Denver, Colo., Thomas (Joyce) Seaman of Asthall, England, Barbara (Geoffrey) Stauffer of Lansing, Mich., and Robert (Katie) Seaman of Tucson, Ariz.; as well as seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
Barbara was the last surviving member of her generation of the Akeleys in Presque Isle, having been preceded in death by her parents and 17 brothers and sisters.
