Ann T. Orlando, 85
SOUTH PORTLAND -- Ann T. Orlando, 85, of Anthoine Street, formerly of Skylark Road, Portland, died peacefully at the South Portland Nursing Home early Friday morning, Jan. 18, 2013, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Portland the daughter of Thomas E. Sr. and Alice Conwell Martin. Growing up in Portland, Ann attended Cathedral (Elementary) School with her brothers and sisters then Cathedral High School. During and after high school, Ann worked at the F.W. In 1945, she married Henry T. Orlando and they made their home in Portland. As a young woman, dancing was her favorite social venue; however, raising her own children was her greatest joy. She loved creating a warm, beautiful home and filling it with family for traditional Sunday dinners after Mass and holiday gatherings for the next two generations, eventually passing that baton on to her children and grandchildren. Ann was also an avid seamstress and enjoyed making clothing for her family as well as upholstering any piece of furniture that even suggested a need for new covering.
Ann was dearly loved by friends wherever she lived and worked. She was described by them as a kind, warm, welcoming, and compassionate ally with a good sense of humor. In here final three years, she was blessed with a loving friendship that filled her days with laughter, peace and joy.
Ann was predeceased by her siblings, James Martin, Eugenia 'Sissy' Martin, Alice Martin Conway, Harold Martin, Thomas E. Martin Jr., Francis Martin and Nancy Martin Erickson; and especially her daughter, Kathleen A. Richards, formerly of So. Portland who died on Jan. 13, 2003. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon T. Orlando of Portland, a son, Henry T. Jr. and his wife Dorothea Orlando of South Portland; her very dear and devoted friend, Stan Jonaitis of So. Portland; grandchildren, Ronald E. and his wife Sherri Richards of Windham, Jennifer A. (Richards) Heisel and her husband Bill of So. Portland, James A. and his wife Jaime Lowell Martin of Sanford, Alison S. Martin, MD, and her husband Adarsh Vasanth, MD of North Andover, Mass., Geoffrey T. and his wife Deborah Pelletier Martin of Cumberland, Matthew H. Orlando of Cumberland, and Angela M. Orlando of Cumberland; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and their children.
A time of visitation will be held on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. Prayers will be recited on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at 9:15 a.m., at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert Regan, SJ as celebrant. Interment will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park. Those wishing to send a tribute in Ann's memory and to find more information may do so at
The family wishes to acknowledge with love and gratitude the excellent care provided to Ann by the South Portland Nursing Home family where she lived for the last five months of her life, returning there to spend her final hours after her most recent and brief stay at Maine Medical Center. Ann felt that the SPNH was her real home and her time there was secure and happy. The family also acknowledges the outstanding care provided to Ann by the Maine Medical Center staffs in the Emergency Department as well as the physicians, nurses, nurse aides and staff at both the 9th and 7th floor units. Our deepest gratitude is extended to the cardiology team led by Dr. John Lualdi with the assistance of Dr. Paul Sweeney and Cardiology Associates P.A., and to Dr. William Ervin, her primary care physician for many years.
