NORTH YARMOUTH -- Angela B. McNaboe, 102, passed away peacefully on Dec. 28, 2012 with her family by her side at her home, Bay Square at Yarmouth, Maine. She was born Angeline Barbara Mackiewicz on June 15, 1910 in Saginaw, Mich., the youngest of seven children. She reminisced fondly about being the baby of such a large family. To listen to her many stories about growing up during the early 1900's was a history lesson in itself and she cherished her upbringing in rural Michigan. Her hardworking immigrant parents instilled the values of self-reliance and determination which she lived by until her passing.
She married Maurice J. ('Mac') McNaboe in 1935 in Saginaw where he was managing a W. T. Grant Co. department store. They were relocated by the Grant Co. to Indianapolis, New Haven, Conn. and eventually were assigned to open a new W.T. Grant store on Congress Street in Portland in 1943. Once in the area they fell in love with Maine and vowed never to leave. Mac managed the Congress Street store until his retirement in 1967. They lived in Cape Elizabeth where they raised three sons. They later moved to Cumberland Foreside. Mac, who was the love of her life died in 1993.
Angela was a very strong and independent woman who was totally self sufficient until very recently. Maurice lovingly called her 'Champ.' She drove her car daily on errands and visits until her son took her keys after her 100th birthday. Her religion was the foundation of her life and she was a faithful member of Holy Martyrs Catholic Church of Falmouth. She was an avid reader of newspapers and novels, enjoyed the Red Sox and played golf well into her nineties. At 100 years she was awarded an Honorary Membership by the Portland Country Club of which she was very proud. Angela moved to Bay Square in 2009 and the staff and other residents there became her extended family whom she loved and appreciated. She participated in many outings and activities at Bay Square and loved the frequent day trips to go shopping. Angela loved a good sale and enjoyed sharing her bargains with friends and relatives.
Angela is survived by her sons, John S. of Standish and his wife, Carol, Thomas R. of Cumberland Foreside, and Dennis J. of Santa Barbara, Calif. Her grandchildren are Stephanie Steinmetz of Wesley Chapel, Fla. and her husband David, Jessica McNaboe of St. Petersburg, Fla, Thomas J. McNaboe of Portland, Michael J. McNaboe of Yarmouth and his wife Melissa, Brian J. McNaboe of Seattle, Wash. and his wife Yvonne Krauss, Anthony M. McNaboe of Portland, and Donald and Dylan McNaboe of California. She was predeceased by her husband, Maurice and her first granddaughter, Angela McNaboe. She is also survived by many great-grandchildren including Ben, Morgan, Brayden and Olive McNaboe of Yarmouth and Trevor, Emily and DJ Steinmetz of Wesley Chapel, Fla.
There are no visiting hours scheduled. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Martyrs Catholic Church, 266 Foreside Road, Falmouth, ME on Friday Jan. 4, 2013 at 11 a.m. Details will be provided at the Mass for a Reception for friends and family at the Portland Country Club. A private burial ceremony will be held in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Falmouth. On-line condolences can be given to the family at
The McNaboe family expresses their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Bay Square at Yarmouth and Hospice of Southern Maine. They would like to send a special thank you to Marcia Barrington, Director of Nursing at Bay Square, for her love, kindness and support and who made Angela's last two years there so enjoyable and special.
