Albert Lawrence, 90
CAPE ELIZABETH - Albert Lawrence, 90, died Thursday, March 16, 2017, at his home. Born in Wolkolata, Poland, on July 29, 1926, Al was the son of the late Jan and Emilia (Zbrodycha) Lawrynowicz.
Upon the German invasion of Poland, Albert became a laborer in a factory for the Third Reich at the age of 14. During his time as a laborer, Albert learned to never show weakness and developed a strong work ethic. He always noted that without working hard, he wouldn't have earned his meals. This strong work ethic continued throughout Albert's life until the day he died.
When the war ended in 1945, Albert moved throughout the South Pacific and settled in Australia until the late 1950's. In 1959, Albert left Australia and entered the United States through Michigan. He later moved to Maine to be closer to his family in Biddeford and met Dorothy Dobrowsky, who he married on July 29, 1961.
Albert and Dorothy raised their sons in Portland's West End. It was in their family home that Albert taught and instilled the importance of hard work to his sons. Albert could always be found working for both his own family and others. Never one to sit idle, Albert stayed busy with his garden throughout his entire life. His garden was recognized in the Portland Press Herald.
He and his wife were very active in St. Louis Church. Throughout the years, Albert contributed many of the flowers from his garden for the Sunday masses at the church. Dorothy was the organist for the church and Albert sang during many of the masses.
He also enjoyed walking his dog, reading, and making return trips to Poland. As his family got older, he enjoyed spending holidays with his family and grandchildren.
He is survived by sons, Albert Lawrence and wife Debbie of North Easton, Mass., and Richard Lawrence of Portland; grandchildren, Erin, Samantha and Christopher; sister-in-law, Mary Campbell of South Portland; niece, Kathy Campbell of South Portland, and nephew, Mike Campbell of New York City.
