Cocosis Brickates, 84
SACO -- Zoe Helen Cocosis Brickates, of Saco, died on Dec. 11, 2012, at the age of 84 following a short illness.
Born in Camden, N.J., on March 30, 1928, Helen was the eldest child of Achilles and Margaret Cocosis, who emigrated from the Macedonia region of Greece to the Philadelphia area in the 1920s.
After living several years in Camden, the family later relocated to nearby Haddonfield, N.J.
A gifted student, Helen graduated near the top of her class from Camden High School in 1946. She went on to study at the University of Pennsylvania, and was one of the first women to attend classes at the previously all-male Wharton School of Economics. She graduated with a degree in economics in 1950.
After college, Helen worked as a social worker for the state of New Jersey, specializing in child neglect and abuse cases. After several years with the government, Helen left to become director of social services at Cooper Hospital in Camden.
On Oct. 14, 1962, Helen married Robert Brickates, a judge advocate in the U.S. Air Force whom she met while on vacation in Miami Beach. The couple lived first at Geiger AFB in Spokane, Wash., before moving to Tachikawa AFB in Japan. During their three years in the region, the pair traveled Japan extensively and developed a particular fondness for Hawaii. The couple was later stationed at McGuire AFB in New Jersey and Hanscom AFB in Massachusetts before Robert's retirement in 1972.
After Robert's retirement, the couple settled in Robert's hometown of Saco where he joined his late brother George's real estate law practice. Avid travelers, Helen and Robert through the ensuing years visited destinations throughout North America, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America. Hawaii remained a favorite spot, and Helen would eventually visit the island chain more than a dozen times during her lifetime.
Following Robert's death in 2008, Helen continued to travel, taking trips to Florida, Puerto Rico and her beloved Hawaii.
Helen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Evanthia Valerie and Brian Kennedy of Milton, Mass.; her grandson, Alexander Robert Kennedy, also of Milton; her cousin and cousin-in-law, Evelyn and Bernard Degen of Northbrook, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 133 Pleasant St., Portland. Interment will follow at St. Demetrios Cemetery in Biddeford. Arrangements are by Dennett, Craig & Pate, 365 Main St., Saco.
