William J. Hannigan III

William J. Hannigan, III, 'B.J.', 24
BANGOR -- William J. Hannigan, III, 'B.J.' 24, of Portland, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012. He was born in Portland on Dec. 18, 1987, the son of William J. Hannigan, Jr. and Carolyn M. Dorr. Will grew up in Portland, graduating from Cheverus High School in 2006. While at Cheverus, he played football, hockey and baseball. His love for travel started with a trip to Chile with his Spanish Class in high school. During his high school years, Will worked for Prime Painting, Portland Sea Dogs and Cumberland County Civic Center.
Will graduated from UMO in 2011 with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering and was an active member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. At the Fraternity, he held multiple offices, including Treasurer, Ritualist and the North American Food Drive Chairman.
Will worked as a research assistant at Maine Secure Composites. He managed portions of projects related to research and design.
In 2008 Will enlisted in the Maine Air National Guard. He graduated top of his class from Aerospace Maintenance Apprentice (C-135) Course in March 2009. He was promoted to Senior Airman in 2011 and was deployed to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar as part of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. He attended Airman Leadership School in 2012 and was selected for Pilot Training in October 2012. Will was on active duty with the 101st Air Refueling Wing in Bangor.
Will was awarded the Air Force Outstanding Unit Service Medal, the Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Medal.
He enjoyed flying, his motorcycle, the Military, traveling, hockey and spending time with his family and friends
Will is survived by his parents, William J. Hannigan, Jr. of Portland, Carolyn M. Dorr and her husband Bruce of Windham; his sister Alyx Hannigan of Portland, brother Justin Hayden and his wife Alison of Buxton; niece and goddaughter Madelyn J. Hayden; his girlfriend Annika Mathiasson of Canaan; his grandmothers, Virginia Shaw and Gloria Hannigan both of Portland. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family would like to thank the Air National Guard for their support and generosity during this time.
Friends and family are invited to visiting hours on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012 from 4 - 6 p.m. at A.T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1342 Congress St. Portland. Interment with full military honors will follow the mass at Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway, South Portland.
