Walter A. Smart, 95
SACO -- Walter A. Smart, 95, of Saco and Buxton, passed away on July 29, 2013, at his residence. He was born in Saco on March 29, 1918, the son of Ivory and Carrie Benson Smart. Walter attended local schools and graduated from Thornton Academy in 1937.
He later served in World War II and the Korean Conflict in the United States Navy.
Walter worked as welder and Quality Control for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for over 30 years, retiring in 1981.
Walter was known for being a do it yourself type person and helped complete his recent home in 1987.
A long time resident of Saco, Walter was involved in many local organizations. He was a member of the Saco Conservation Commission, Past President of Saco Historical Commission, Past Master of Saco Grange No. 53, a member of National and state Grange, Past Master of Pomona and Saco Grange, and Saco Masonic Lodge #9 F & AM.
Walter was predeceased by his wife, Shirley Irish Smart; and two sons, David Smart and Walter Smart Jr. Survivors include a son, Donald Smart and his wife Saundra of Dover, N.H.; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Julia Redman.
Friends and relatives may call on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dennett, Craig & Pate, 365 Main St., Saco. A Grange service will be held at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 10 a.m. Burial will at Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta on Monday at 1 p.m.
