Sandra A. Blaisdell

Sandra A. Blaisdell, 63
PEAKS ISLAND - Sandra A. Blaisdell peacefully passed away at home on Peaks Island on Dec. 22, 2017, after a short illness caused by an aggressive form of cancer. Sandra was born in Boston, Mass., with her twin Susan, on Dec. 27, to George and Beverly Blaisdell.
She graduated from Pittsfield High School and went on to Boston Children's Hospital School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse in 1975. Sandra specialized in Neonatal Intensive Care and Pediatric nursing in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.
Sandy's passion for boats and sailing was an integral part of her life. At the age of 46, once all her children had become adults and were living on their own, she took an indefinite leave of absence from her nursing career, and captained her 22' sloop Halcyon from Peaks Island all the way to the southern Bahamas. She loved every aspect of boating, including the care, maintenance, provisioning, navigation and especially the adventures of new destinations and new friends. Bill Cooley came aboard as first mate on the maiden voyage to the Bahamas and he ultimately became the love of her life and husband. Their many years of sailing adventures to the Bahamas and along the intracoastal waterway provided a lifetime of stories and memories. One of their early trips was featured in Cruising World magazine "The Minimalists of Georgetown". They eventually graduated to a larger, 30' sloop named Foxtrot.
Sandy is survived by her husband, William J. Cooley. She leaves three children, Sky Courtney of Taos, N.M., Ana Courtney of Portland, and Myles Courtney of Portland; her twin sister Susan Blaisdell of Truces, N.M., and two brothers, George H. Blaisdell Jr. of Graham, N.C. and Christopher W. Blaisdell of Pittsfield, Mass.; and three granddaughters, Francesca "Frankie" and twins, Sophia and Sage.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring at a date to be announced.
