Peter J. Fanning, 63
SANFORD -- Peter J. Fanning, 63, passed away in sweet peace Thursday, April 18, at Maine Medical Center with his hand in his sister's. Born April 5, 1950 to the late John E. and Bernadette (Dube) Fanning. He lived in Waban Projects group homes in Sanford.
Peter was mentally disabled, with a seizure disorder compounded more recently with Dupuytren's Contracture, dementia, and cancer. He was proud of everything he did and had been an avid participant in Camp Waban summer programs, the Maine Special Olympics, sheltered workshop programs and had been employed at Mardens in Sanford.
In recent years, Peter retired, continuing to enjoy his social life and hobbies. He was a great supporter of the Red Sox and Celtics. He enjoyed travel, especially Disney.
Peter is lovingly remembered by his sister, Susan Miller of Rutland, Mass., brother, John of Portland, sister/guardian, Jane Fanning Brown of Eliot. Peter was proud to be uncle to Hillary Brown, Melissa Miller, and Becky Lindquist, and Nick Miller. Equally important are the women who were his caretakers, especially Claire, Debbie, Tracy, Cathy, Brittany, Dorinda and Liz.
Peter loved casual gatherings with cookouts. In this way, a celebration of Peter's life will be held on Saturday, April 27, at 2 p.m., at the Wormwood Center, Waban Projects, Inc., Route 4, Sanford. Please go to www.mcintiremccooey.com to sign the on-line guest book. Private services will be held for the family at a later date.
