Midge Brooks Vreeland
GRAY -- Midge Vreeland, partner emeritus of Vreeland Marketing & Design in Yarmouth, died on Feb. 17, 2014, in the company of loving family and friends at her home in Gray.
Midge graduated from Northwestern University
, where she met her husband Stewart Vreeland on a blind date in 1971. They've been together ever since.
In 1978, when she and Stew opened S.T. Vreeland Advertising in Brunswick, she was among a handful of women in Maine who ran their own agencies. She served as managing partner of the agency, now based in Yarmouth. Midge led a generous life of service and celebration, including as president of the Spannocchia Foundation in Italy, where she and Stew own a 16th century home.
Midge was predeceased by her parents, Leon Eric Brooks Jr. and Patricia Joye Thompson. She is survived by the love of her life, Stew; much-loved children, Zachary of New York, N.Y., Wiley of London, England, and Grayson of Chicago, Ill.; by brothers and sisters, Kix and Barbara Brooks of Nashville, Tenn., Ben and Jennifer Brooks of Enis, Texas, and Lisa Brooks of Shreveport, La.; as well as dear cousins, SuSu Rosenthal and Kathy and Ken Drake; and aunt Mary Grace McCarty, all of Baton Rouge, La. She is also survived by her father-in-law, Don Vreeland of Marshalltown, Iowa; and many beloved brothers and sisters- in-law, including Roger and Donna Vreeland of Marshalltown, Iowa, Jack and Nancy Montgomery Vreeland of Portland, and Bill and Mary Vreeland Hawk of Vinton, Iowa, a nurse who was at Midge's side day and night, as was sister Ginny Vreeland Gold of North Yarmouth. Dear friends include Paul and Betty Turina of North Yarmouth; 'Ya-ya' girlfriends, Kay Selber Zeidman of Houston, Janie Richardson of Shreveport, and Ruthie Orth of Pensacola, Fla.; Liz Bradford of Falmouth; Roberta Anzalone of Torino, Italy; and Alexia Schrott of Padova, Italy.
A celebration of life is planned for Saturday, Feb. 22, at 3 p.m., at First Parish Congregational Church, Yarmouth. And it will be a celebration: loud ties, happy shoes and sunglasses are optional but encouraged. Flowers may be sent to the church for Saturday's celebration.
