GORHAM -- Lillian 'Pat' Mountain, 82, of Gorham, a two- time breast cancer
and heart attack survivor, joined the angels on Oct. 8, 2013, while surrounded by her husband, daughter and two eldest grandchildren after a 20 month battle with lung cancer.
She was born on June 25, 1931, to William E. and Lillian (Laramie) Tierney in Worcester, Mass. She graduated from North High school in 1949 and went on to attend Gorham State Teacher's College. She met the love of her life, Robert H. Mountain, in 1950 during her sophomore year of college and they were married on July 18, 1953.
Her career began as a 3rd grade teacher at Saccarappa School in Westbrook in 1953. She took a hiatus from teaching to raise her daughter, Tammy, who was born July 20, 1965. Pat tried her hand as a Preschool teacher when Tammy entered school, but went on to teach 3rd grade, her career favorite, at Millett School once Tammy entered 4th grade. In 1981 she began teaching at Narragansett School where she wrapped up her teaching career in 1991. Teaching was not only Pat's career, it was her passion. Throughout her life she shared stories with friends and family of her memories of students, and could always recall the story behind the gifts she held onto.
After retiring in '91, Pat and Bob spent their days traveling to numerous destinations, by car, plane, and Royal Caribbean. When they weren't traveling, they were consumed with their life as grandparents, helping to raise their first born grandchildren, T.J. and Chelsea. Between their home in Gorham, camp on Little Sebago, and winters in Florida, there truly was a lifetime of memories in Pat and Bob's 60 years of marriage. Two additional granddaughters and three great-granddaughters completed their family and allowed Nana to continue her teaching well beyond retirement. Pat and Bob's love was and will continue to be an example for their family and all who have known them over the years.
She is survived by her husband and best friend, Robert; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Peter Woodbury; grandchildren, Thomas Moore Jr., Chelsea and Daniel Torrey, Brooke and Leah Woodbury; and great-grandchildren, Calli, Audrey and Ava. She will also be sorely missed by her sisters, Eleanor McEnroy and husband Charlie and Colleen Doe and husband Kenneth.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 299 Main St., Gorham on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are welcome to visit with the family at the Dolby & Dorr Funeral Chapel, 76 State St., Gorham on Friday from 4-7 p.m. Private burial will be in the Eastern Cemetery, Gorham.
