Lesley M. Hobson

Lesley M. Hobson, 93
TOPSHAM -- Lesley M. Hobson, 93, a longtime resident of Topsham, died on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at Mid Coast Senior Health Center in Brunswick following a long illness. He was born on Oct. 10, 1919, in Tacoma, Wash., the son of Louise Walter and Hattie Belle (Winegar) Hobson. He attended schools in Washington, graduating with the Class of 1937.
Mr. Hobson entered the U.S. Navy immediately following high school where he served during World War Two and the Korean War as a Chief Aerographer's Mate retiring in 1959 after 22 years of service. Following his time in the Navy, Les went to work as a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Cleveland, Ohio, and lived with his family in Medina, Ohio. In October of 1969, he moved the family to Topsham where he continued his career as a meteorologist at the weather radar station at Brunswick Naval Air Station until his retirement in July of 1979.
Les enjoyed watching NASCAR. His favorite driver was Jeff Gordon, a following that he may have acquired from his wife who was also an avid NASCAR fan. He enjoyed gardening and puttering around his yard doing various projects. He was a Star Trek fan and his favorite character was Data (probably due to the fact that they were both 'analytical' but 'Human').
Weather was a longtime interest and one of his great loves. He was just like a kid in anticipation of a big snow storm. He was always looking up into the sky to study the weather patterns and was in awe of the power of the atmosphere. Les held a special place in his heart for his many pets. He loved his cat Butchie, his Black Lab Gypsy, his German Shepherd Heidi and his 'Grand Dog' Topaz.
Les' greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed the summers that the family would rent a cottage on Sebago Lake during the 1970s. He enjoyed seeing the many family members from Maine that would always come visit at the cottage at least once during the summer.
As Les was always looking up to the sky, he will now be forever watching down and over all of those who he loved so much.
Les was predeceased by his beloved wife, Alvia (Rackley) Hobson who died in 2008; a brother, Delmar, a half sister, Esther; and a son, Howard Lesley Hobson who died in 1975. Survivors include two daughters, Mary L. Bort of Topsham, Barbara E. Gros of Winter Park, Fla.; a sister, Betty Pappas of California; and two grandchildren, Bill L. and his wife Jennifer Gros of Ashburn, Va., and Beau E. and his wife Carrie Gros of Nashville, Tenn. Survivors also include several nieces and nephews; and his ex-son-in-law, Phillip J. Bort of Hyde Park, Mass., with whom he always maintained a close relationship.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick, with the Rev. Ronald McLaughlin officiating. A time of visitation will immediately follow the service and will be held until 1 p.m.
