Karen Kay Geary, 68
WESTBROOK - Karen Kay Geary, 68, died on Nov., 28, 2013 at home with her family by her side. She was born on March 18, 1945 the daughter of Arthur William and Verna L.(Guthoff) Kramer.
Karen grew up in Joliet, Illinois and graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1963. After receiving her degree from Purdue University in 1967, she married David Geary and they moved to Maine. In 1984, she and David launched Geary Brewing Company, the first microbrewery east of the Mississippi. Geary's became a pioneer of the brewing industry in Maine and New England and Karen was one of the first women to own and operate a brewery in the U.S. When she wasn't working at Geary's, Karen lived a life filled with family, friends and good food. She enjoyed watercolor painting and loved spending time with her grandson.
Karen is survived by her former husband and business partner, DL Geary and her two children; Kelly Geary Lucas and husband, Donnie of Westbrook and Carrabassett Valley, and Matthew Geary and wife, Lorie Enlow Geary of San Francisco, Calif.; grandson, Benjamin Geary of San Francisco, Calif.; brother, Dale P. Kramer of Naples, Fla.; and sister, Connie Kramer Canter of Rockford, Ill.
A celebration of Karen's life will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at JP Thornton's Café, 740 Broadway, South Portland, ME 04106. Arrangements handled by the Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham. Condolences may be left for the family at www.dolbyfuneralchapels.com
