H. Holden MacDonald
TOPSHAM -- H. Holden MacDonald, formerly of Needham and Dover, Mass., died peacefully in Topsham on Dec. 9, 2013, three days shy of his 89th birthday.
Born in Winchester, Mass., Holden was the son of the late Hector and Barbara (Holden) MacDonald of Melrose.
While studying at Tufts, he entered the V-12 program and received his D.D.S. from the Indiana University School of Dentistry while serving in the Navy. Much later in his life he would receive his B.A. with honors from Harvard.
At 22, he began a thriving 47 year career as a dentist at Dedham Medical Associates where he was beloved by colleagues and patients alike.
At 25 he married the love of his life, Jane Louise Faber, of Philadelphia. They joyfully celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary this past June.
He and Jane were avid skiers, golfers, gardeners and travelers to favorite destinations in Europe and Sedona, Ariz. Holden also became an accomplished goldsmith, delighting friends and family with fanciful rings, earrings, and pendants. In retirement he developed a passion for painting and became a locally celebrated watercolorist. Above all, he cherished his family and was a devoted father and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, Jane, Holden is survived by three children, Bruce MacDonald of Jamaica Plain, Mass., Elizabeth MacDonald of Denver, Colo., and Nancy MacDonald of Cumberland; a brother Ted of Peabody, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Holden's life will take place in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.
