WINDHAM -- Eileen 'Bunny' H. Ackroyd, 86, of Windham, died from complications of a stroke on Jan. 20, 2013, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, peacefully surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Ackroyd was born on April 4, 1926, in South Portland, to Henry H. and Iva Wilson Horne.
Bunny was a 23 year breast cancer survivor who could and did do everything she set her mind to. She had a spirit and will that was like no other. After graduating from South Portland High School, she attended Eastern Nazarene College before entering the workforce at R.E. Cleaves & Sons in Portland and later Maine Rubber International in Westbrook where she would retire after 32 years of service. She was an active member of the Beta-Sigma-Phi, Westbrook chapter, women's sorority.
On Feb. 18, 1979, Bunny married H. James 'Jimbo' Ackroyd, of Windham, where they have made their house a home for the last 33 years.
Bunny will be remembered for her whoopie pies, quick wit, love of family, never-ending spirit and most of all her compassion and devotion to her husband and best friend Jimbo. She enjoyed dancing and attending events involving her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bunny was predeceased by her parents; sister Dottie Ridlon, brother Charles Horne; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Bunny is survived by her son, Michael D. Stackhouse of Windham, daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl E. and Fred H. Libby of Porter, daughter and son-in-law, Jayne D. and Bruce W. Britting of So. Portland, step-sons, Jay Ackroyd and wife Karen Wojtyla of New York, N.Y., David Ackroyd and wife Lydia Isales of Rose Valley, Pa., Robert Ackroyd of Windham, step- daughter Amy Ackroyd of Fairmont, N.H.; brother-in-law, COL (Ret.) Robert Ackroyd and wife Marge of Ft. Worth, Texas, sister-in-law, Janice Jilson and husband Richard of Athol, Mass.; eight grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to the doctors and nurses of MMC ER, R9, and Gibson Pavilion for the compassionate care they extended.
An hour of visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham, followed by a 2 p.m. memorial service at the chapel. Online condolences may be made to the www.dolbyfuneralchapels.com.
