MARYLAND -- Diana M. Barter passed away on March 20, 2014, at Emeritus of Towson Assisted Living Center after a long struggle with HER2 positive breast cancer.
Diana was born on April 27, 1942, in Bath, the daughter of Herman F. and Ethelyn Gray Barter. She grew up in Bath and attended Bath schools, graduating with the Morse High School Class of 1960.
She attended Husson College in Bangor and in 1962 married Chester Pogorzelski, USAF. During their marriage they lived in Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana and the Republic of the Philippines. While in the Philippines, Diana was employed in the office of the Hospital Field Director of the American Red Cross at USAF Hospital, Clark Air Base.
Upon her return to Bath in 1974 Diana went to work at Supervisor of Shipbuilding, U.S. Navy, Bath and worked there until her retirement in 2003. She was then employed in several part time positions, the most recent being in the Office of the Sagadahoc County Emergency Management Agency in Bath.
Among her fondest memories were the times spent with her grandparents, Vernon and Addie Oliver Gray, at their home in Five Islands and at her family's summer cottage, also in Five Islands.
She was predeceased by her parents; by her brothers, Richard A. Barter and Andrew V. Barter, and by sister, Nancy Barter Cruz. She is survived by a son, Mark Pogorzelski and his partner Karen Murphy Dowd of Martha's Vineyard, daughter Julie Pogorzelski Bolster and husband Peter of Baltimore, Md.; beloved granddaughter Maisie Loan Bolster of Baltimore; sister Frances Gray Barter of Fort Fairfield; as well as by several nieces and nephews.
Special thanks for the help and assistance during her illness go to niece Jennifer Marquis and friend Marie Mann.
She is also survived by long-time childhood friends, Margaret, Marie, Helen, Georgia, Debbie, and others; and a special sister-in-law, Marlene Barter, who helped keep the memories alive.
A graveside service will be held later this spring, with date and time to be determined.
