SCARBOROUGH -- Shirley M. Corse, 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 20 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
She was born August 22, 1922 in Greenfield, Mass., the daughter of Harold L. and Eunice (Hunt) Deane. She attended Greenfield schools and Westbrook Junior College, Portland, Class of 1941. During WWII, Shirley worked at Harvard University.
She married Donald Corse on December 3, 1944 and lived in Cambridge and Wenham, Mass.
In 1952, the Corses, with daughters, Margaret and Marie, transferred to Cali, Colombia, where in 1955, son Dean joined the family. Beside the challenges of keeping house and raising children in another culture, Shirley was active in setting up a volunteer program in a local hospital.
During twenty years in Venezuela, Shirley was active in both American Girl Scouting and Venezuelan Girl Guides, as well as a Kindergarten for underprivileged children.
Following two years in Brazil, the Corses retired to Maine, spending summers at their cottage in Gorea and winters in Scarborough, where Shirley volunteered at the Scarborough Historical Society, the Scarborough Public Library, Camp Sunshine, Maine Audubon Society, the Scarborough Land Trust, Literacy Volunteers and Hospice of Maine.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Margaret, in 1993 and her husband, Donald, in 1995.
She is survived by her daughter, Marie of Michigan and her son, Dean of Florida, a sister, Judith Newlin of Arizona, and four grandchildren, two great granddaughters, and by her long-time companion, Thomas Morgan.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 31st at the Hillcrest Community Center, 108 Hillcrest Avenue, Scarborough.
