Robert Walter
Ballou, 87
SCARBOROUGH -- Robert (Bob) Walter Ballou, 87, died at his home in Scarborough on Aug. 6, 2014.
Bob was born on Feb. 8, 1927, in West Quincy, Mass. He graduated from Boston English High School and enlisted in the Navy Air Corps as a turret gunner at the age of 17. After the war, he attended Worcester Junior College and later graduated from the Sloan School of Management at MIT.
His long and successful career began at age 12 at the Better Belt and Buckle Company in Boston. After graduating from MIT his management career took him from Boston to Rochester, Puerto Rico, Tennessee, Ohio and Texas, with companies such as American Optical, Stromberg Carlson, and ITT. After retiring from the corporate world, he opened several small businesses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He and his wife, Norma, moved to Scarborough in 1994.
Bob constantly explored things around him. He was an expert bow hunter, a scratch golfer, an accomplished parachutist and an amazing storyteller. In his later years, he taught himself to paint and wrote many short stories for his grandchildren.
Bob and his wife Norma had an entertaining and solid marriage of 62 years. He was a mentor and hero to his three children; and entertainer, counselor and guardian angel to his three grandchildren.
His advice, support and stories will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
Visiting hours will be on Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route One, Scarborough. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Maximilian Kolbe on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at 12 p.m., followed by burial at Scarborough Memorial Cemetery.
