Arthur J. Waters, 81
WORCESTER, Mass. -- Arthur J. Waters, 81, of Shrewsbury, Mass., died on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, in Saint Francis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a brief illness.
Arthur was born in Windsor, Vt., the son of the late Julius and Florence (Lovell) Waters. The family moved to southern Maine and Arthur was raised in Saco. He graduated from Thornton Academy and served in the
United States Marine Corps
. After the service he went to work as an upholsterer which became his lifelong profession.
He married Barbara Murphy and raised his four children in Saco.
He owned and operated Art's Upholstery in Pepperell Square Saco, and Carriage Trade Upholstery in Biddeford. Arthur took great pride in his work and was considered a master craftsman in his field. All four of his children worked with him in his shop in their younger years. His two daughters continued his legacy by choosing careers in the upholstery/slipcovering profession. Throughout his life he taught upholstery at several adult education facilities.
Arthur was a lifelong member of the Elks. He was involved in various youth organizations when his children were young. He was a founding member of Maremont Little League in Saco. He and several of his friends were concerned that too many young boys were not getting an opportunity to play organized baseball in Saco, so they built a field and started this second league. He was an avid sports fan following all the New England teams especially his beloved Boston Red Sox.
In 1987, Arthur moved to Shrewsbury, and married Joan A. (Wagner) Martin Waters. While in Massachusetts he worked for various upholstery businesses and continued to teach upholstery at night.
His wife of 26 years, Joan A. (Wagner) Martin Waters died in 2010. He leaves two sons, Jeffrey P. Waters and his wife Suzanne of Nags Head, N.C., and Dennis M. Water and his wife Nancy of Saco, one daughter, Peggy Lavigne and her husband Robert of Lyman; a sister, Cecile Friedman of Saco; his former wife, Barbara (Murphy) Waters of Saco; three stepsons in Shrewsbury; four grandchildren and two great- grandsons. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Christine Waters; two sisters and three brothers.
